Controversial UKIP peer Lord Pearson of Rannoch has claimed that if current population trends continue, England could have a Muslim majority population within the next 49 years.

In an email to Lords ahead of him tabling an Oral Question on the issue which was held on Monday, Lord Pearson called for a national debate on the issue and questioned the relationship between Sharia and domestic law.

“The general population of England grew from 49 million in 2001 to 54.5 million in 2016, an increase of 10.9%. The Muslim population grew from 1.5 million in 2001 to 3 million in 2016, an increase of 107.3%,” he wrote.

“If we project this growth rate forwards, Muslims will form a majority of the English population by 2067, from the present level of around 6%. They will form a majority in 10 English local authorities by 2031.”

On tabling the question in the House of Lords on Monday afternoon, Lord Pearson was met with a chorus of boos, flippant comments and condemnation from other peers.

The 75-year-old tried reasoning with other members, stating: “Well, let’s talk about it. Several of our local authorities will soon be Muslim-majority and anger is already rising among our kufr working class at the Islamification of their communities…I yet again ask them to foster an open national debate about Islam to include our Muslim friends so that we can all understand with what we may be dealing in a few years’ time.”

But his pleas for serious debate were rebuffed with Baroness Williams of Trafford confirming that the Government had made no assessment of the current or future growth of the Muslim population.

“The Government have no plans to hold a national debate on Islam,” she added.

Labour Party life peer, Lord Kennedy of Southwark, said: “Does the noble Baroness agree that this great country of ours has always accepted immigrants of different faiths, traditions and cultures, and that tolerance, respecting of difference and accepting the rule of law as determined by Parliament must always be the way we go forward, along with standing up to Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and any other form of hate that seeks to divide us?”

And former Liberal Democrat MP Baroness Tonge, who was forced to resign from Charles Kennedy’s front bench in 2004 after suggesting she would become a suicide bomber if she was Palestinian, went a step further by hinting that Lord Pearson was inciting racial hatred.

She told the house: “My Lords, will the Minister launch an investigation into the growth in the number of people named Pearson in this country and assess what effect it is having on racial harmony?”

Estimates suggest that up to 90 sharia councils are operating in England and Wales with projections from the Pew Research Centre suggesting that the Muslim population in the UK will triple over the next 30 years, to reach 13m in 2050.
