A local shop owner has been heavily criticized online for allegedly purchasing milk from a local Tesco superstore only to resell in his own store for £4.
Pick & Save, a local convenience store in Port Glasgow, has come under fire online after a picture went viral allegedly showing the shop owner purchasing a trolly full of milk from Tesco and attempting to resell at a significantly higher price. Also highlighted in the online post was the bread being sold for £2.50 from the same store.
A range of opinions were seen by the thousands of people commenting and sharing the post. Whilst the majority shared the feeling that this was a distasteful attempt to profit on the back of the poor weather which has left many families without milk and bread among many other essentials, there were others who felt this shop owner was looking after his local community by ensuring he wasable to provide what they needed.
One Facebook user said: “Guys actually risking his life every day to get supplies I don’t mind paying 50p more for a loaf he sells cheaper than all the shops all year round so no one complains then cheapest shop in Port Glasgow but that’s mypersonal opinion. Taxi to Tesco and back for me would be £10 or pay him 50p more????”
To which another user replied:
“True but its not right making money with the snow Paddyhe dose(sic) not overcharge any other time why now making pensioner pay more for bread and milk it’s not fare(sic) on them.”
It was also highlighted during the outrage that £4 for milk and £2.50 for bread was still cheaper than having to take a taxi to the supermarket.
Scotland was told to prepare for bad weather when the MET Office issued a red weather warning this week, most of Scotland completely shut down resulting in many supermarkets and local shops not receiving any deliveries.
Should the big brand supermarkets limit the selling of milk and break when desperate situations like this occur?
Is it unacceptable for local shops to purchase items for the purpose of selling the items on at a significantly higher price?
